Naylor Court Commons Action Plan

Since 2015 the Town has engaged in several strategic initiatives intended to capitalize on Naylor Court’s existing assets and create a new vision for the location. There are five key planning documents the Town has undertaken that details the micro and macro levels. These documents can be found on the Town website.

Naylor Court is a triangle bound by Summer, Nason and Main Streets. It is a tangled conglomerate of public and private parking areas and contains a significant collection of businesses and restaurants with outdoor dining terraces, a large municipal parking area, and Veterans Memorial Park. It also functions several times a week as a drive-through distribution point for patrons of the Open Table Food Pantry.

Due to its central location, Naylor Court serves as a conduit between several downtown destinations including the Fine Arts Theater, Main Street and Nason Street Businesses.

The increase in the number of residential units and outdoor dining demand has pushed “activation” of Naylor Court to the forefront of Maynard’s economic development initiatives. Naylor Court represents an opportunity to support the mutually reinforcing objectives of economic and community development.

With Maynard lacking a traditional New England “town common”, Naylor Court is well positioned to take up that mantle through a combination of targeted infrastructure investments, strategic initiatives, and community outreach, that can unlock a communal gathering place. These initiatives will help foster increased activation of Naylor Court, including expanded outdoor dining, new business uses, and creation of a community amenity.

This action plan recognizes that, rather than a singular effort, this initiative will be most successful if it consists of a series on incremental, interlocking action items.

The core goals of Naylor Court Rejuvenation are:

  • Making the area more inviting
  • Make it more people/pedestrian friendly
  • More green space and seating areas
  • Create a centralized dumpster location
  • Expand cultural, recreational, and community activities
  • Enhance Naylor Court as a “destination” to entice customers downtown

We are happy to announce that the first long-awaited step in this initiative, the removal of the parking meters, was approved by the Select Board on Tuesday August 5th
