Interview with Maynard Police Department Chief Christoper J. Troiano

The Maynard Police Department web site prominently displays its core value: “We are committed to protecting and serving the community.” We can all be grateful that members of the department exceed that commitment daily, and as a result, we live in a town where law enforcement officers are both a congenial presence in our midst as well as fierce protectors of our safety. Their commitment and extraordinary investigative abilities were never more evident than in a recent episode involving the arrests at 107 Main Street: The Maynard Voice recently contacted Chief Troiano of the Department to say thank you for his team’s extraordinary police work, and to ask for an insight into how the investigation unfolded.

Was it community reports that first prompted the investigation?

Our department received concerns from community members about possible illegal activity at the business around the same time we became aware. Those tips were taken seriously, documented, and became part of the information that prompted our investigation. We appreciate residents coming forward — their information can make a real difference in public safety, and I would like to thank those that did contact our department with information.

Can you walk us through the investigative process for a case like this?

While I can’t share specific investigative techniques, generally a case like this begins with gathering and corroborating information from multiple sources. This may involve surveillance, interviews, records checks, and coordination with our state and federal partners. Once sufficient evidence is developed, we work with the District Attorney’s Office and, if necessary, any additional outside agencies to obtain search warrants and safely execute them.

How long did the investigation take and what departments or agencies were involved?

This investigation lasted several weeks. The Maynard Police Department led the case, with assistance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Human Trafficking Unit and the Massachusetts State Police. Their expertise and resources were instrumental in bringing this case to a successful conclusion.

What should residents take from this example about how/when to report suspicious activity?

If you see something that seems unusual or concerning, contact us right away — even if you’re not sure it’s criminal. Trust your instincts and let us investigate. No concern is too small, and your information may be the missing piece we need.

How do officers prepare for executing a search warrant in such a public and populated place like downtown?

We conduct very careful and meticulous planning to ensure the safety of the public, the officers involved, and anyone inside the premises. This includes a risk assessment, assigning proper personnel, and coordinating with other agencies. Public safety is always our top priority.

What are some of the key challenges of a case of this nature in a small community?

In a small town, these cases can draw a lot of attention, which means balancing transparency with the need to protect the integrity of the investigation. A good thorough investigation takes time, and we thank the public for their patience as we worked to establish the probable cause we needed. There’s also the challenge of ensuring that victims, if any are identified, receive proper support and resources, which is also a priority in any investigation.

Is there anything you’d like to share about the officers and/or detectives who worked on this case?

I’m extremely proud of our officers and detectives. They worked diligently, followed the evidence, and collaborated effectively with our partners. Their professionalism and commitment to the community were evident at every step.

What are some things the public might not realize about the time, effort, and coordination that goes into investigations like this?

These cases often involve weeks or months of behind-the-scenes work — gathering evidence, conducting interviews, coordinating with other agencies, and securing legal documents approved by the court. Much of this work happens quietly, but it’s critical to achieving a safe and lawful outcome.

Yes. This case showcases the Maynard Police Department’s responsiveness to community concerns, our ability to conduct thorough and methodical investigations, and the strength of our partnerships with state and federal agencies. It also reflects the dedication and skill of our officers and detectives who perform exceptional work, day in and day out—often without public recognition. While this investigation brought their efforts into the spotlight, it is representative of the outstanding work they do for our community every single day.

Is there anything else you would add that you’d like the public to be aware of?

I want the public to know that the Maynard Police Department will continue to respond to their concerns, investigate thoroughly, and work to keep our community safe. We are grateful for the trust residents place in us and encourage them to continue reaching out when they see or hear something that concerns them.
