Emerson Hospital Plans Major Emergency Department Expansion

We all need good health care, especially in an emergency, and it’s awfully comforting to know that we can access it close by. That’s why Maynard residents will be glad to know that Emerson Hospital in Concord is planning major improvements in its facility and services to provide state-of-the-art healthcare to residents in the communities it serves.

“Transforming Health” is focused on “expanding access to emergency care throughout the region. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Emerson has experienced a steady rise in emergency room visits, including a nearly 10% increase in patients between fiscal year-to-date 2024 and 2025. With the recent closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center, Emerson’s Emergency Department provides lifesaving care to more patients than ever. Building a new emergency department will provide the space and resources needed to care for our expanding and aging community and for future generations.”

The transformation will include the latest imaging and radiology services adjacent to the new Emergency Department, a dedicated behavioral health unit for patients and emergency vehicles and a more streamlined process for patents and vehicles when arriving at the Department.

The project will take several years and will be supported through a major fundraising campaign that is the most significant philanthropic opportunity since Emerson opened 115 years ago.

“Building a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department is not just an investment in our facilities — it is an investment in the lives and well-being of every person who comes through our doors,” said Christine Schuster, RN, MBA, President and CEO of Emerson Health. “The Transforming Health Campaign allows us to modernize and expand access to advanced healthcare to meet the growing needs of our region with the highest standards of safety, compassion, and care. These improvements will ensure that we are fully prepared to provide critical, lifesaving treatment and a healing environment for all who rely on us — for generations to come.”

Emerson serves over 300,000 people throughout the communities of  Bedford, Concord, Sudbury, Groton, and Westford, and urgent care centers in Hudson, Littleton, and Maynard.
