On Sunday, March 22, more than 50 business owners, town and state dignitaries and volunteers gathered at the Sanctuary Cultural Arts Center for the 3rd Annual Economic Development Business Awards and Recognition Brunch. The event, catered by Bagel Table, celebrated the achievements of local award recipients and fostered a spirit of collaboration within the Maynard business community.

Armand Diarbekirian, chair of the Economic Development Committee, served as emcee. The program featured guest speaker state Rep. Kate Hogan and Select Board Chair David Gavin, who shared the story behind the “Mayenard” Super Bowl weekend rebranding. Gavin also thanked KVC Builders for their pro-bono work on the town’s welcome signs. Special guest speaker Jason Weeks, executive director of Cambridge Arts, spoke on the role of arts and culture in stimulating the local economy.
The following awards were presented:
- Rising Star Award: Presented by Steve Silverstein to Libby Parise of Felixology, recognizing a successful business in operation for five years or less that has had a significant impact on the downtown landscape.
- Distinguished Public Service Award: Presented by Select Board member Mike Stevens to Denise Shea for her advocacy for Maynard’s small businesses.
- Nonprofit of the Year: Presented by Sarah Cressy to the Maynard Community Gardeners for their dedication to the upkeep of the downtown shopping area.
- Most Philanthropic Award: Presented by Megan and Mark Pesce to Jay Murray of Minuteman Building for his generous contributions of time and resources.
- Business of the Year: Presented by Select Board member Jeff Swanberg to Kevin Baker of the Sanctuary Cultural Arts Center, recognizing its role as a destination for culture and entertainment.
In his closing remarks, Diarbekirian expressed gratitude to all attendees and extended special thanks to the organizing committee, the Sanctuary, the Economic Development Committee, state Rep. Hogan, Select Board members Gavin, Stevens and Swanberg, Executive Director of Municipal Services Steve Silverstein and the Town of Maynard.
