To the Editor and our Department of Public Works:
Walking through our downtown should be an invitation to enjoy our local shops, restaurants, and history. However, lately, that experience is being marred by a growing forest of “zombie” parking meters—relics of a decommissioned system that no longer serve a purpose.
It is time for our Department of Public Works to prioritize the removal of these eyesores from our sidewalks. Here is why this small change would make a big impact:
Eliminating Confusion: For locals, the “out of order” or “Free Parking” stickers are familiar. But for visitors and patrons trying to support our downtown businesses, these meters are a source of unnecessary stress. No one wants to spend their first five minutes downtown wondering if they’re about to get a ticket because they couldn’t find a coin slot that works.
Improving Accessibility and Aesthetics: Our sidewalks are for people. These metal poles create physical clutter, narrowing the path for strollers, wheelchairs, and busy shoppers. Removing them would instantly open up our streetscape and make the area feel cared for and modern.
Signal of Progress: Leaving broken, unused infrastructure in place sends a message of stagnation. By clearing away the old, we signal that our town is looking forward and values the quality of its public spaces.
We all want a vibrant, welcoming downtown Maynard. Let’s stop treating our sidewalks like a graveyard for 20th-century tech. It’s time to pull the poles and let our downtown shine.
