Carolyn Lee Cunningham Bruno died on June 21, 2026 in Boscawen, NH after a long period of declining health. She was born in Concord, MA on April 3, 1942 to Ferris and Margaret (Middleton) Cunningham.

Carolyn was raised in Maynard, MA and graduated from Tufts University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in music and drama. She moved to Fairfield, CT, where she met Daniel Bruno and was married in February, 1965. (They divorced in 1987.) Over the years, she obtained a variety of master’s degrees in education, school administration, organ performance, drama, and journalism from Fairfield University and Bridgeport University. She was a music teacher early in her career at schools in Norwalk, Easton and Fairfield, but she spent most of her career in Bridgeport as a performing arts teacher, first at High Horizons Middle School and then at Central High School. She also spent two decades of summers with the Fairfield Teen Theater, first as the music director and then as the director. In her spare time, she was a church organist and choir director at Calvin United Church in Fairfield, Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport, and several Hungarian churches in Bridgeport. She lived in Fairfield for almost 50 years, until she moved to New Hampshire in 2014.
Carolyn was an extremely talented pianist and organist. However, directing musical theater and working with teenagers was what she enjoyed most. She put all of her energy into recruiting students for her shows, helping them develop their talent, and encouraging them to follow their dreams. Over the years, she developed a large and devoted group of former students whose lives she had impacted for the better. In particular, she helped dozens of inner-city students with the process of auditioning for college music and theater programs and even helped with expenses.
She also had two daughters, Carynne Christine (Bruno Fillmore) Johnston of Henniker, NH and Blair Irene (Bruno) Turnbull of Stratford, CT, and one grandchild, Sophia Turnbull. They can attest to the fact that Carolyn gave the best of herself to her students and her work.
Carolyn is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John and Kathy Cunningham, several cousins in Canada, and her two daughters, their spouses, and grandchild.
Burial will be private. A memorial may be held in the future.
Donations in Carolyn’s honor may be made to Klein Theater Arts (formerly known as After School at the Klein), a program of the Klein Memorial Auditorium providing tuition-free instruction in music, dance, and drama to Bridgeport students in grades 6-12.
