Town of Maynard Signs Lease for New Senior Center

At its regular meeting on February 3d, the Maynard SelectBoard approved the lease of space on the ground floor of 141 Parker Street for a new Senior Center. During remarks at the announcement, SelectBoard members commented on the widespread support the project has received. Board Chair David Gavin noted in particular the diligence of town administrator Greg Johnson during the lengthy process. Board member Chris DiSilva mentioned how the multiple groups advocating for a new center, including the Senior Center Focus Group, the Friends of Maynard Seniors and the Council on Aging, had come together in the Senior Center Committee to reach the goal of a new facility.

At more than 5500 square feet, the new space will be nearly five times larger than the present center in the back corner of the golf course clubhouse.

The building owner is Maynard headquartered Lexvest Group, which   will reconstruct approximately half of the ground floor of the building to meet senior center functional needs defined by the Maynard Council on Aging (COA). Town administration and the COA Director will work with Lexvest during construction and the COA will continue to be responsible for managing the new center after it opens.

In addition to the programming benefits of more space, the new location will bring other improvements to the senior center experience. The lease includes parking spots on level ground for a minimum of thirty-five (35) vehicles, including two (2) dedicated 24/7 for Council on Aging vans, and four (4) handicapped spaces. The building is immediately adjacent to Maynard Crossing, with its shopping, eating, banking, healthcare and fitness opportunities. The layout includes multiple rooms with defined spaces for simultaneous program activities, offices for staff and service delivery, and a lounge area with kitchenette. There will be a covered entrance.

The lease term is fifteen (15) years, beginning on the occupancy date which, in turn, depends on the construction schedule. That schedule is currently being finalized, after which an opening date can be projected. Funds to cover lease costs were approved in an override vote at the Annual Town Meeting in May 2025 and final negotiated lease costs are within the authorized amount.

The non-profit Friends of Maynard Seniors is raising funds to support equipping the larger center. If you would like to support this effort, the best way to donate specifically for the new Senior Center is to mail a check made out to “Friends of Maynard Seniors, P.O. Box 503, Maynard MA 01754” and include “Senior Center” on the memo line. If there are questions, please email [email protected].
